Dear English-speaking visitor of Marc Luy‘s Cloister Study Homepage!
The website of the cloister study (“Klosterstudie”) presents the main information about the study of nuns‘ and monks‘ mortality, including the most important results of all published and (until now) unpublished analysis. Unfortunately, up to now I haven‘t found the time to offer a complete English version of this website. But the following description will hopefully help you find the information you are interested in on the German pages. Most information provided on this website should be understandable without any background of the German language when you know what is represented there.
Most of the remarks and comments are completed with figures, tables, or photos giving the main information and they are labelled in German as well as in English. In this way you can find:

The starting point and until today the most important research project of the cloister study is the question if male excess mortality (in the industrialized countries currently 5-8 years in life expectancy at birth) is mainly caused by biological factors (genetic and hormonal differences) or non-biological factors (differences in life-style and environmental issues). The fact that non-biological risk factors can be largely ruled out inside the catholic cloistered population allows testing the impact of biological causes on the female survival advantages. The works of this study have been awarded with the first prize for researches by young scholars of the German Foundation for World Population (DSW) and the German Association for Demography (DGD) in 1998 and with the Gunther Beyer Award of the European Association of Population Studies (EAPS) in 2003.
Furthermore, cloister data allow to examine several other questions of mortality research like the impact of education level on mortality or some aspects of historical mortality trends. Corresponding results can be found on this website, too.
During the last years the data on monks and nuns has been updated until 2005 and extended by additional information, i.e. regarding the causes of death. The following websites include the first new results obtained by these data. Although the data about the cloistered population contains almost 12,000 nuns and monks I additionally try to extend the data regarding number of individuals and regions. However, this is dependent on external financial support that is not given until now. Anyway, this website will also keep you informed about this. |

Finally, the data about nuns and monks is to be complemented by data about priests (who are living outside the communities as members of the worldly society). Until today I was able to build one data set incorporating the members of the Bamberg diocese which was analysed (in comparison to the mortality of nuns and monks) in my doctoral dissertation.
I hope this description is enough to understand the information provided on the website of the cloister study. If you have any questions or comments please do not hesitate to contact me and send an e-mail to
I would be very happy for feedback of any kind and any contact pushing forward the work of this cloister study.
Thank you very much for visiting the homepage of the cloister study and I hope you will enjoy your stay!
